Eastern Conference Final: Boston vs New York
The Eastern Conference Final between the Boston Celtics and New York Knicks is the matchup the East has been building towards for three seasons. These are franchises separated by 215 miles and a rivalry that pre-dates the NBA itself β and now, for the first time since 2013, they meet with a Finals berth on the line.
Boston's Championship Machine
The Celtics are defending champions and structurally the most complete team in the East. Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown represent one of the most decorated wing pairings in league history, combining for 52 points per game in the playoffs. But what separates this Boston team from previous iterations is depth: Al Horford at 38 remains one of the most impactful defensive big men in the game, and Payton Pritchard's transformation into a legitimate playoff contributor has given the Celtics a solution to every personnel puzzle they face.
Their defensive rating in these playoffs β 103.4 β is the best of any team remaining. More tellingly, their opponent field goal percentage at the rim is 51.2%, meaning they are not just keeping teams from the basket but converting those contests into misses at an elite rate.
New York's Resurrection
The Knicks' path to the Conference Final involved eliminating Miami and Philadelphia β neither an easy task β and has been built on a foundation of controlled aggression. Jalen Brunson at 28 has become the best point guard in the Eastern Conference this season, averaging 31.4 points in the playoffs on 51% shooting. His ability to manufacture points in isolation against any defender is the one individual problem Boston's system cannot easily solve.
"We've earned the right to be here. Nobody gave us anything. Now we need to earn the right to go further." β Jalen Brunson, pre-series press conference
The Key Matchup
Brunson against Boston's switching defence will decide this series. The Celtics' preferred solution β switching everything and daring opponents to beat them in isolation β has worked against every other team this playoff. Brunson, however, is exceptional in exactly those situations. If Boston over-help on him, Mikal Bridges and Josh Hart are excellent enough shooters to punish the rotation.
- Boston defensive rating in playoffs: 103.4 β best remaining team
- Brunson: 31.4 PPG playoffs, 51% FG β best of any guard in postseason
- Tatum + Brown combined: 52 PPG in playoffs
